WMA Band Nights

These are events where four bands get to perform on the stage, at Brothers Rugby Union Club on a Sunday afternoon, before a live audience including members and patrons of the pub.  Members are encouraged to bring friends and family to enjoy the afternoon out, and to support all of the bands.  It is about having a fun day and supporting other WMA members, and we do ask that members and friends of bands, that play one month, come along the following month so that the bands playing on the night have also an audience of peers.  It is also possible for bands to get some feedback and advice from our more experienced members; if we can help, please see the Band Coordinator.  The WMA provides a drum kit and the BRU Club provides the PA.  Bands are to provide their own back line and instruments.  Bands typically do a 30 to 45 minute set of music of their choice.  Sound levels are set by the BRU and the Committee to ensure the safety, comfort and enjoyment of all.  Food and drinks are available.

WMA Acoustic Day

Acoustic instruments offer a different type of playing and entertaining experience to the amplified environments of many of our other events.  You will hear some great original songs as well cover in music styles vary from soft rock, folk, blues, fusion, through country-ish material to unplugged versions of many of the great rock and roll tunes.  Players provide their own instruments.  The Acoustic Warriors environment is very informal, and many members have found it an easy way to begin performing before a live audience or for new members to come along and be supported in their first performance. Singers welcome we can genrally find someone to play a few tunes for you to sing.  You can perform solo, just you and your guitar, or as a duo, trio, or more.  You can negotiate with the Acoustic Day manager, to play as much or as little as you feel comfortable with generally limit is 20 minutes depending on attendance.

Public Playing Events

The Association is occasionally invited to provide musicians for high profile charity events, sometimes with thousands of spectators. The quality of the bands performing is high, and complementary feedback assures the Association that the policy of selecting the best quality bands is correct. Events have included performances on the River Stage, Wintersun Carnival and Southbank Piazza.

With the advent of the WMA Band and Act Register, the WMA will begin actively seeking involvement for our members in a wide range of public festivals and events.   We look forward to a gradually increasing demand for live music making of all types and styles.

Developmental Events

WMA includes people of all ages and all stages of musical experience and ability.  To assist members to pursue their particular interests and to grow musically, the Management Committee is seeking input and support from WMA members as to what they actually want to achieve through their association.

Theme and Christmas Showcase

Theme and showcase nights are WMA members only events run at the rate of one or two per year.  They are opportunities for all members to get involved.  The events can involve showcasing bands and acts from within the WMA as well as getting attendees involved in all manner of fun music making and jamming activities.

WMA Jamming  (coming 2008.)

There has been some interest, from members, in holding 'structured' jam nights, to give all members an opportunity to play in a band situation.  The idea is for members to choose from a list of 50 songs, nominate which song(s) they would like to play and which instruments, learn  their part in advance, and turn up and play on the night.  If you are interested, let us know.
